Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the last 16, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season proved outmatched against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Asserted from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
