The Citizens 3-0 Man United: Lauren Hemp scores in Manchester City comfortable victory.
Just as bad weather swept through the northern region the night before, the home side blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.
Successive Losses for Manchester United
This scoreline signalled successive Women's Super League setbacks for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the top team with their title hopes hanging by a thread.
United’s ability to balance league and European football with a small roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always appeared this was the week that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they appeared fatigued throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.
Lineup Adjustments
Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided vigor, although the dropping of the high-performing Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.
Manchester City, in comparison, have no such workload concerns. The City coach made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from injury.
Overpowering Start
The trouble started to build for the United boss and his squad from the first whistle. This was a exhibition of the strength from City whose potent offense played with and dismantled the opposition with a sublime opening period display that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.
This put the hosts in a commanding position and saw the visitors all at sea. Before this fixture, the away side had allowed just few in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the face of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.
Initial Opportunities
The omens came quickly when Miedema used her strength to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot wide. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, exploiting the gap left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her deliveries were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.
The Red Devils had multiple attacks ahead, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, meanwhile, commanded the ball, teasing their opposition and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.
Goals Galore
They turned chances into goals with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A delivery to the back post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh headed goal of the season.
They extended their lead with two more goals just before the interval. When Rose was allowed to drive through the middle from defense, the field became spacious for City. The influential Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right before sending a pinpoint driven ball for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the room to strike a shot home from outside the box.
After the Break
The clearest substitution came from the United manager at the break as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the match. Ex- City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to register a solitary shot on target.
The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their cushion when a delightful Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to beat any side who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to place them in a strong standing after nine matches.
